Description

FORBY® 220EX PULSE PRO inverter welding machine

Up to 220 A, pulse MMA mode and convenient LED control in a compact housing.

The FORBY® 220EX PULSE PRO is a single-phase 230 V inverter welding machine for MMA, pulse MMA and Lift TIG DC welding. The welding current is adjustable from 10 to 220 A, and the 60% duty cycle at 220 A makes it suitable for a wide range of repair, installation and metal structure welding work.

Why choose this model?

  • 220 A / 60%: in MMA and Lift TIG modes.
  • Pulse MMA: adjustable base current and pulse frequency.
  • Hot Start and Arc Force: adjustable arc ignition and arc stabilisation functions.
  • Anti Stick: helps when the electrode sticks.
  • VRD: open-circuit voltage reduction function.
  • LED display: clear display of parameters and selected functions.
  • EMC board: reduces electromagnetic interference.
  • 4.64 kg net weight: easy to carry between work sites.

Suitable for welding mild steel, stainless steel and alloy steel when electrodes and welding settings are selected to suit the material.

IGBT inverter technology and EMC board

The machine uses IGBT inverter technology, which allows the welding current to be regulated electronically. The inverter design combines a compact housing, low weight and an output current of up to 220 A.

Smooth current adjustment and additional MMA functions let you adapt the arc to the electrode in use and to the specific task.

Integrated EMC board

EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) refers to electromagnetic compatibility. The EMC board fitted in this model is designed to reduce electromagnetic interference. It complements the machine's electronic system and helps ensure proper operation of the equipment in an electromagnetic environment.

Welding modes and their purpose

MMA - welding with coated electrodes

  • Welding current range: 10-220 A.
  • Electrode diameters according to the manual: 1.6-5.0 mm.
  • Adjustable Hot Start and Arc Force functions.
  • Anti Stick function and switchable VRD function.
  • MMA welding does not require a separate shielding gas supply.

Pulse MMA - pulse welding with electrodes

  • The current periodically alternates between the set welding current and the base current.
  • Base current setting range: 10-220 A.
  • Pulse frequency adjustment: 0.5-10 Hz.
  • Additional options for controlling the weld pool and heat input.

Lift TIG DC - welding with a tungsten electrode

  • Welding current range: 10-220 A.
  • The arc is ignited by touching the workpiece with the tungsten electrode and lifting it.
  • A compatible TIG torch and a separate argon supply are required.
  • Suitable for welding steel and stainless steel when the right parameters are selected.

Lift TIG mode is direct current (DC). The machine does not have an AC TIG mode, which is commonly used for TIG welding of aluminium.

Pulse MMA - more control over the weld pool and heat

In pulse MMA mode, the welding current alternates rhythmically between a higher welding current and a lower base current. During the higher current phase, the metal melts more intensively, while the base current phase reduces the energy input.

By selecting the appropriate base current and pulse frequency, the process can be adapted more precisely to the workpiece thickness, welding position and working pace.

  • Pulse frequency 0.5-10 Hz: sets how often the current alternates.
  • Base current 10-220 A: sets the current level between pulses.
  • Pulse on/off: choose between standard and pulse MMA welding.

The effect of pulse mode depends on the selected current, electrode, workpiece and welding technique. It is advisable to check the initial settings with a test weld.

LED display and single-knob control

The front panel features an LED display and a knob for selecting and adjusting parameters. A short press selects a parameter, and turning the knob changes its value.

The display shows the welding current and the settings of the selected function. Separate indicators help identify pulse mode, base current and frequency settings, and the overheating status.

  • Welding current: for MMA, Pulse MMA and Lift TIG modes.
  • Base current: pulse MMA setting, marked with the letter "B".
  • Pulse frequency: the value is shown with the "Hz" indicator.
  • Hot Start and Arc Force: adjustable from 0 to 10.
  • Electrode diameter and workpiece thickness indicators.
  • VRD control in MMA mode: by a long press of the knob.

Functions for easier electrode welding

Hot Start - easier arc ignition

At the start of welding, the current is briefly increased to make arc ignition easier. The function intensity is adjustable from 0 to 10 depending on the electrode used and the working conditions.

Arc Force - arc stabilisation

When the arc shortens, the function increases the current and helps reduce the likelihood of the electrode sticking. The 0-10 adjustment range lets you adapt the arc response to the welder's technique.

Anti Stick - help when the electrode sticks

When the electrode sticks, the welding current is reduced so that the electrode can be separated from the workpiece more easily and its heating is limited.

VRD - lower open-circuit voltage

The VRD function reduces the output voltage when not welding. In MMA mode, it can be switched on or off. This function adds protection but does not replace proper grounding, dry gloves and other welding safety measures.

220 A at 60% duty cycle

The duty cycle indicates what portion of a 10-minute period you can weld at a specific current under rated test conditions. The data is given according to the machine's rating plate.

Mode60%100%
MMA220 A156 A
Lift TIG220 A156 A

60% at 220 A means 6 minutes of welding and 4 minutes of cooling in a 10-minute cycle.

100% at 156 A means continuous operation at this current under rated conditions. During operation, ensure free air circulation and follow the machine's operating requirements.

Compact and easy to carry

Weighing 4.64 kg, the machine is easy to move to another work site. It has a handle on top, and a carrying strap is included.

  • Machine dimensions: 330 × 130 × 200 mm.
  • Front control panel: LED display and parameter adjustment knob.
  • Front cable connectors: easily accessible "+" and "-" outputs.
  • Fan: for forced cooling of the electronics.

Place the machine on a stable surface. According to the manual, leave at least 50 cm of free space around it for air circulation.

ROBUST CONNECTORS DESIGNED FOR HIGHER LOADS

Large 35-50 type welding cable connectors ensure reliable contact and stable current transfer. Properly connected and locked connectors help reduce contact resistance, connector heating and energy losses at the connection points.

Secure connection of the electrode holder and ground cables. The 35-50 type + / - connectors on the front panel allow convenient cable connection and selection of the polarity required for the electrode in use. The cables are easy to disconnect when preparing the machine for transport or storage.

FORBY welding equipment focuses on quality, durability and ease of use, which is why even the compact FORBY® MMA 200EX PRO machine uses large 35-50 type cable connectors - a practical solution for everyday welding work.

Important before starting work

  • Provide a suitable power supply. The machine requires a single-phase 230 V supply. The maximum input current stated on the rating plate is 51 A in MMA mode and 37 A in Lift TIG mode, so the supply line and its protection must be selected according to the machine's load.
  • Match the electrode and current. Follow the electrode manufacturer's recommendations and consider the workpiece thickness. Check the initial settings with a test weld.
  • Check cables and contacts. Lock the connectors securely and attach the ground clamp to a clean, electrically conductive area of the workpiece.
  • Observe the duty cycle. If the overheating indicator lights up, stop welding and let the machine cool down with the fan running.
  • Prepare additional accessories for Lift TIG work. A compatible TIG torch, argon cylinder, regulator and suitable consumables are required.
  • Use appropriate protective equipment. Ensure ventilation, remove flammable materials and protect the machine from rain and moisture.
